A Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement today (19 August) on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Afghanistan’s independence:
“The German Government congratulates all Afghans on the 100th anniversary of their country’s independence.
The terrible terrorist attacks of recent days that have claimed the lives of so many people overshadow this festive occasion. This violence must end; all women and men of Afghanistan must finally be able to live in peace again and also be able to celebrate. Upholding human rights and ensuring both continuity of the democratic constitution and free, fair and transparent elections are prerequisites for peace, prosperity and stability. That is what we are working for, together with the Government of Afghanistan and our international partners.”
